Temporary wealth must not destroy God’s creation

The Chairperson of the Asante South Presbytery, Rev. Daniel Brobbey, has issued a heartfelt call to miners and operators engaged in illegal mining (galamsey) to embrace responsible practices and honour their God‑given duty to protect the environment.

Speaking at the first anniversary of Ayanfuri District at the Ebenezer Congregation, Ayanfuri, on the sacred responsibility of environmental stewardship, Rev. Brobbey reminded Ghanaians that the nation’s mineral resources are not merely economic assets, but divine gifts entrusted to the care of the people. He stressed that the land, rivers and forests are part of God’s creation and must be treated with reverence.

Rev. Brobbey urged all who work in the mining sector to recognise that their activities have long‑term consequences for the nation’s future. He described Ghana’s natural environment as a sacred inheritance that must be preserved for generations yet unborn. Destroying water bodies, degrading farmlands, and stripping the land for short‑term gain, he warned, is a betrayal of the biblical mandate to be faithful stewards of God’s creation.

He stated that responsible mining is not only a civic duty but a spiritual obligation. “Ghana’s mineral wealth is a blessing from God,” he said, “and blessings must be handled with care, wisdom, and accountability.” He cautioned that the reckless exploitation of natural resources for temporary wealth undermines the wellbeing of communities and violates the principles of justice, stewardship, and love for neighbour.

Rev. Brobbey called on miners, community leaders, and policymakers to work together to protect the environment, restore degraded lands, and ensure that mining activities contribute to sustainable development rather than destruction. He encouraged Christians, especially those in mining communities, to lead by example by advocating for ethical practices and resisting activities that harm the environment.
