The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has urged newly commissioned ministerial probationers from the Trinity Theological Seminary to commit themselves to lifelong spiritual discipline, warning that it is possible to begin ministry with zeal yet lose touch with God along the way.
Preaching on the theme “The Calling of God” from 1 Samuel 16:1–13, the Moderator reminded the candidates that ministry is a divine assignment, not a human appointment. “It is the Lord who calls us,” he said, stressing that the church merely mediates God’s call. “Stay in touch with the Lord. Start well but also end well.”
Drawing from the story of Saul’s rejection in 1 Samuel 15, he noted that disobedience and rebellion cost Saul the throne even though he continued to occupy the office. “It is possible to be in the church and not carry the anointing of God,” he cautioned. “Be very careful, because it is possible to lose the anointing and still mount the altar.”
He warned the probationers not to allow the pressures of ministry to weaken their devotional life. “Check your devotional life. The intensity with which we stay close to the Lord often wanes because of the enormity of work,” he said. “If we do not take care, we will lose touch with the Lord.”
Quoting Amos 3:3, he reminded them that walking with God requires agreement and alignment. “It is easy to fall out of step because sometimes we are more inclined to our natural inclinations than the things of God.”
The Moderator emphasised that spiritual disciplines are lifelong disciplines, urging the new ministers to cultivate prayer, humility, and obedience. “Do not start in the Spirit and end in the flesh,” he said, referencing Galatians 3:3.
The service, held at the PCG Peniel Congregation, Teshie, brought together clergy, families, Presbyteries, and congregants who witnessed the commissioning of the 2026 cohort into ministry.
