The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) for its support to Presbyterian Agriculture Services (PAS), describing the partnership as a major contribution to agricultural development and food security.

Addressing the 7th Development and Social Services (DSS) Consultation at the Presbyterian Women’s Centre, Abokobi, the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, specifically commended the Ministry for recognising PAS as the National Best Faith-Based Organisation in Practical Agriculture at the 2025 National Farmers’ Day Celebration.

He also thanked the Ministry for the tractor, other prizes, and 1,500 bags of high-grade fertiliser allocated to PAS. “We are deeply grateful for the recognition accorded to Presbyterian Agriculture Services and for the practical support provided through the tractor, prizes, and fertiliser,” the Moderator said, adding that the support would strengthen the Church’s agricultural work and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

According to him, the fertiliser is being distributed to smallholder farmers, demonstration farms, and youth-led farming clusters to boost productivity and promote sustainable livelihoods.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye highlighted some of PAS’ achievements in 2026, including the planting of 24,000 seedlings under the Tree for Life Initiative in partnership with the Forestry Commission, the training of 1,000 young people in nursery management, and the establishment of two nurseries in the North-East and Savannah Regions.

He further disclosed that about 12,700 smallholder farmers received training in good agronomic practices, while more than 15,000 farmers benefited from fertilisers and improved agricultural inputs. In addition, approximately 40,000 farmers were enrolled on a digital extension and market-linkage platform with support from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).

The Moderator noted that these interventions demonstrate the Church’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, women’s empowerment, and rural transformation. He appealed to the Ministry to deepen collaboration with PAS in the areas of agricultural inputs, mechanisation, extension services, and market access, particularly as the Church rolls out its flagship Agenda 20,000 Acres initiative.

The initiative seeks to mobilise 20,000 acres of Church and community land over the next five years to establish climate-smart, youth-led agribusiness hubs aimed at creating jobs, strengthening local livelihoods, and contributing to national food security.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye expressed confidence that the partnership between the Church and the Ministry would continue to create opportunities for farmers, women, and young people while advancing Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda.
