The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has cautioned generational groups within the church against practices that do not align with Presbyterian liturgy and identity.
In an address read for him by Kwahu Presbytery Chairperson, Rev. Joshua Bossman Ohene, at the 5th CLAN Moderatorial Forum at Abetifi‑Kwahu, the Moderator touched on the growing practice in some groups of cancelling the names of deceased members from registers with accompanying ceremonies. He described the practice as un‑Presbyterian, stressing that it has no basis in the tenets of the church.
“As much as it may appear to be plausible, it has no locus within the tenets of who we are as Presbyterians. Groups that hold such practices must desist from them and ensure that whatever we do aligns with our liturgy,” he said.
The Moderator stressed that the church must remain faithful to its traditions and doctrines, urging leaders to work closely with the CLAN Directorate to ensure consistency in practice. He noted that the identity of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana must be preserved through adherence to its liturgy and theology, rather than adopting practices from external sources.
He concluded by encouraging group leaders to collaborate with CLAN in building a church whose identity reflects its heritage and values. “Let us work together to build a church with an identity we can all be proud of,” he stated.
