Moderator calls on Ministers to emulate example pioneers

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante has paid glowing tribute to pioneers Ministers of the Church for working tirelessly to ensure the survival of the Church in Ghana.

He said, but for the work of pioneer African Ministers, there was no way the mission of the Basel Mission Society would have survived if their African compatriots had not made sacrifices. He therefore called on the current generation of Reverend Ministers to emulate their examples.

The Moderator made the call when he in the company of the Clerk of General Assembly Rev Dr Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor and some Presbytery Chairpersons observed a minute silence in memory of the Very Rev, Peter Hall and Rev. David Asante when he visited the burial places of the two great men of the Church at the Mission Cemetery at Akropong-Akuapem in the Akuapem Presbytery.

Very Rev Peter Hall

Very Rev Peter Hall was the first Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. Peter Hall (1851 – 1937) was a Gold Coast-born Jamaican teacher, missionary and Presbyterian clergyman who was elected the first Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast,, a position he held from 1918 to 1922. Hall was the son of John Hall, one of 24 West Indian missionaries who arrived in the Danish Protectorate of Christiansborg and worked under the auspices of the Basel Evangelical Missionary Society.

 Rev David Asante

The late Rev David Asante (23 December 1834 – 13 October 1892) was a philologist, linguist, translator and the first Akan native missionary of the Basel Evangelical Missionary Society. He was the second African to be educated in Europe by the Basel Mission after the Americo-Liberian pastor, George Peter Thompson. Asante worked closely with the German missionary and philologist, Johann Gottlieb Christaller and fellow native linguists, Theophilus Opoku, Jonathan Palmer Bekoe, and Paul Staudt Keteku in the translation of the Bible into the Twi language.

The Moderator and Officers of the Church were at the cemetery to lay to rest the mortal remains of the late Rev. Edith Osafo-Affum.
