The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has urged Ghanaians to confront the pressing challenges facing the nation with moral courage and faith.
Speaking at the 4th National Public Lecture of the PCG (under the auspices of the Ecumenical and Social Relations Department) at the Ghana Police Church, Accra under the theme: “Living Ecologically Just: A Biblical Response to Ecological Threats,” the Moderator maintained that matters of illegal mining have to be confronted head-on.
He stated that the church must not remain silent in the face of destructive practices such as illegal mining, environmental degradation, and corruption. He likened these issues to “demons” that must be crushed, drawing on Biblical illustrations to stress the urgency of collective action.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye called on Presbyterians, the Christian community, politicians and all citizens in positions of authority to use their influence to protect the environment and uphold justice.
He reminded the audience, comprising students second cycle and tertiary institutions, church groups and associations, ecumenical partners, the clergy and academics that, the church was not only spiritual but also social, and thus require active engagement in shaping a just and sustainable society.
