The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has reminded newly commissioned ministerial probationers that God’s call to ministry is not based on human qualifications, status, or academic achievement, but on divine purpose and grace.
Speaking at the commissioning service for graduates of the Trinity Theological Seminary at the PCG Peniel Congregation, Teshie, Accra, the Moderator said God’s choice of David over his older, stronger brothers illustrates that divine calling does not follow human logic. “God chose a man after His own heart; not by the standards of human beings,” he said.
He urged the probationers to avoid pride, arrogance, and the temptation to see themselves as indispensable. “Never think you are indispensable. There is only One person who is indispensable, and that is Jesus Christ,” he stressed.
Referencing 1 Corinthians 1:26–29, he reminded them that God often chooses the weak, the lowly, and the overlooked to accomplish His purposes. “Do not boast of any accomplishment because it is the Lord who works through you,” he said. “Ministry is not about academic degrees. If it were so, then some university professors would be ministers.”
The Moderator encouraged the new ministers to seek God’s purpose for their lives and follow His direction. “Find out from God what His purpose for your life is,” he said. “In all things, be faithful to Him.”
He also warned them against corrupt influences and spiritual complacency. “Live spiritually without corrupt and bad influences. Do not be corrupted by the influences around you,” he advised.
Quoting Jeremiah 9:23–24, he reminded them that true boasting lies only in knowing and understanding the Lord. He concluded with Philippians 2:12–13, urging them to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, trusting God who works in them to fulfil His good purpose.
