WCC Youth Commission meeting opens in Accra
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana is hosting the World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission of Young People in the Ecumenical Movement in Accra, bringing together young Christian leaders from across the globe to strengthen ecumenical relationships and explore how churches can become spaces of healing, reconciliation and hope.
The meeting, which opened on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, under the theme, “Journeying Together: Creating Healing Spaces,” is guided by the Ghanaian expression “Biako Ye” (togetherness). Discussions are focusing on challenges confronting young people, including social exclusion, conflict, mental health concerns and the emerging impact of artificial intelligence.
In a message read during the opening service, WCC General Secretary, Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, urged young people to embrace leadership and active participation in the ecumenical movement.
“The ecumenical movement needs your voices not because you are young, but because you are part of the body of Christ,” he said, while expressing appreciation to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for hosting the gathering.
Moderator of WCC Young People in the Ecumenical Movement, Rev. Karen Erina Puimera, commended the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for its hospitality and contribution to national development, particularly in healthcare. She also called on churches to create spaces where young people are heard, supported and empowered to flourish.
Welcoming participants, National President of the PCG Young People’s Guild, Mr. Paul Ayana, highlighted the growing influence of Christianity in the Global South and invited delegates to experience the rich heritage of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, which has sustained its witness for nearly two centuries.
An exhortation on the meeting theme was delivered by Rev. Dr. Rose Buerkie Puplampu, who encouraged participants to intentionally create environments where people feel safe to share their struggles and find healing and restoration.
Speaking on behalf of the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, Rev. Enock Kofi Obuobi stressed that healing is best nurtured within caring and supportive communities.
The meeting is expected to deepen collaboration among young ecumenical leaders and strengthen the shared Christian witness for peace, unity and hope around the world.
