The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante has called on Christians across the globe especially in Ghana to redouble their efforts to win more souls for Christ.
The Rt. Rev Prof. Mante made the call at the 2022 National Launch of Evangelism Week of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at the Trinity Congregation, Kwashieman in the Ga West Presbytery on Sunday, 6th March, 2022.
The 2022 Evangelism Week is under the theme; “Jesus Christ, the Light of the World”.
The Moderator said the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has its mission, to improve Church Growth through evangelism and nurture to fulfill the Great Commission as commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ.
He said in August 2005, the Church took a decision to grow by 10% each year. Unfortunately, the Church had not been able to do this. It was therefore important that a critical review on the approach to evangelism and methods employed to be accountable each year.
“Upon considerable reflection on the Church’s approach to evangelism and the staggering growth, it was evident that we needed a clearer path to attain the objective of 10% growth each year “he said.
He said, based on this, the idea of growing the Church to one million, five hundred thousand members by 2023 was birthed which is termed Vision 1.5.
The Moderator admonished members of the PCG to support the initiatives of the Church to achieve the Vision 1.5 Agenda.
He said an average growth of 8% was recorded in 2021 which was the highest growth rate in the past twenty years, but it still did not meet the 10% annual growth target. The Moderator commended the agents of the Church for working hard to increase the growth rate despite the challenges they went through.
He said for the first time the Church’s population has passed 1.2 million people mark and it is expected that by 2023 the population would grow to 1.5 million.
He said the Church is playing key roles in the socio-economic development of the country through the provision of social services such as health, education agriculture and others.
Preaching the sermon on the theme “Truthfulness in Worship”, the Clerk of General Assembly of PCG, Rev. Dr. Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor commended the founding fathers of Ghana and challenged all Ghanaians to add on to the growth of the nation as the nation celebrates 65 years of Independence. He led the Congregation to sing the National Anthem.
He said worship involves everything we do as Christians and therefore admonished the congregants to be serious in whatever they do. Rev Dr Odonkor mentioned that worship involves truthfulness, mercy and justice.
The Ga West Presbytery presented thirteen motorbikes, seventy suits and seventy pairs of shoes to be given to Ministers in deprived areas as their contribution to the launch.
The Moderator, Rt. Rev. Mante later presented five motorbikes to the Dangme Tongu Presbytery for mission work. They were received by the Lay Representative to the General Assembly Council, Mr. Stephen Yaw Akafo, on behalf of the Presbytery Chairperson.
Present at the Service were Rev. Dr. Daniel Osei Bediako Akoto, Chairperson of the Sekyere Presbytery who is also the Chairperson of the Evangelism Committee of the PCG, Rev. Enoch Adjei Pobee, Ga West Presbytery Chairperson and Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Sarbah, the National Director of Mission and Evangelism. Other Ministers present included Rev. Kofi Manukure Acheampong, the Kwashieman District Minister, Rev Dr Kofi Antwi, Ga West Presbytery Clerk and Mr Ben Botwe, Ga West Presbytery Lay Representative on the General Assembly Council.
