The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye has urged the church to recommit to discipleship as the cornerstone of its growth agenda.
Delivering his address at the 21st National Evangelism and Church Growth Consultation at the Ramseyer Training Centre, Abetifi, he reminded participants that while the church has achieved much, its growth targets remain unmet, with membership increases falling short of the 10% annual goal.
The Moderator noted that the Agenda 2 Million initiative and the mission to plant 1,000 new churches embody the vision of both qualitative and quantitative growth but stressed that discipleship is the most sustainable path forward.
“Effective discipleship helps us retain members and deal with the back door syndrome that allows them to slip away unnoticed,” Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye said, adding that nurturing believers through teaching and mentoring produces the dedication and leadership the church needs.
The Moderator listed the five marks of mission—proclamation, discipleship, diakonia, advocacy, and ecological ethics—while stating that discipleship must remain central to the church’s strategy. He called on presbyteries to empower congregants to share their faith, nurture the youth, and strengthen discipleship models to sustain momentum.
Acknowledging the church’s missionary heritage, the Moderator urged leaders to build on the foundation laid by forebears, ensuring that the light of Christ continues to reach communities across Ghana and beyond. He concluded by declaring the consultation open, encouraging participants to embrace collaboration and unity in pursuit of fruitful growth.
