Amid ongoing national debate over religious expression in Christian mission schools, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has appealed to traditional leaders to lend their voice in defence of the ethos and values that define such institutions.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Akwamu, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, the Moderator referenced the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Commission and recent public discourse, stressing the need to preserve the spiritual and moral foundations upon which mission schools were built.
He commended Ghana’s enduring stability, attributing it in part to the peaceful coexistence among political, traditional, and religious leaders. “Unlike other countries, Ghana has stayed together because we tolerate each other,” he said, praising the collaborative spirit that has held the nation together.
The Moderator expressed gratitude to God and the chiefs for the cordial relationship between the PCG and Akwamu, describing it as a foundation for growth. He offered prayers for Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, asking for long life and prosperity for him and his traditional area.
Highlighting the legacy of Presbyterian missionaries, he noted the church’s continued investment in education, with thousands of schools at the basic, secondary, and tertiary levels. He stressed that mission schools have played a vital role in integrating Ghanaians and warned that nothing should be done to undermine the unity they have fostered for decades.
