Ghana needs deeper national reflection, strong moral renewal, and decisive action on issues threatening her stability and growth, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye has stated.
In his Easter pastoral letter, the Moderator condemned the recent escalation of violence in Nkwanta and other conflict‑prone areas. He described the situation as “unacceptable and must stop,” stressing that innocent lives continue to be destroyed and human dignity trampled upon.
The church, he noted, “cannot and must not remain silent” in the face of violence and injustice. The Moderator shared four Christian responses to national and global crises: prayer for leaders and nations, commitment to justice, compassion for the suffering, and unwavering witness to truth, saying that these are essential in upholding peace and human dignity.
Turning to domestic challenges, the Moderator highlighted threats to mission schools, environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, youth unemployment, moral decline, and widening social inequality. These issues, he warned, “continue to threaten our very existence and advancement, and thus demand urgent attention.”
Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye stressed that Easter calls the nation not only to spiritual renewal but also to moral and social responsibility. “Righteousness exalts a nation,” he reminded citizens, urging integrity in leadership and accountability in public life.
He also acknowledged the public stance of President John Mahama on matters of national values and identity, especially his position on human sexuality and the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. He noted the international backlash the President faced, including the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by Lincoln University, describing it as evidence of the tensions of a globalised world.
He urged Parliament to give renewed attention to the bill so that “clarity, consistency, and national consensus may be achieved.” The Moderator encouraged Ghanaians to work together for peace, justice, and national renewal, guided by the hope of the risen Christ.
