The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called for a renewed national commitment to an educational system that shapes character, nurtures values, and produces responsible citizens. His message was delivered during the National Conference on Stemming the Growing Indiscipline in Schools, organised by the Ministry of Education.
The conference, held in Sunyani on Wednesday, brought together policymakers, educators, traditional leaders, religious leaders, parents, teachers, and students to address the rising challenge of indiscipline in Ghanaian schools. The theme for the gathering was “Stemming the Growing Indiscipline in Schools in an Emerging World.”
Speaking at the event, the Moderator stressed that education must go beyond academic achievement to include moral formation, respect for authority, honesty, hard work, and service to society. He noted that the Presbyterian tradition became a household name precisely because it combined academic excellence with strong moral instruction and discipline.
He warned that the responsibility of raising disciplined young people cannot be left to schools alone. “The church, home, school, and wider community must work together,” he said, emphasising that character formation is a shared national duty.
The Moderator also cautioned that in an era where material success often overshadows values, Ghana must intentionally build a society grounded in responsibility, integrity, and service. He urged stakeholders to confront indiscipline with seriousness, noting that the future of the nation depends on the values instilled in today’s children.
