The Director of Ecumenical and Social Relations, Rev. Andrews Jackson Teye Odjawo, has reaffirmed that the Presbyterian Church of Ghana will not depart from its traditions but will preserve its heritage while adapting to contemporary realities.
Speaking at the launch of the Moderatorial Gown Design Competition at Church House, Osu, Accra, Rev. Odjawo explained that the competition was conceived after the church’s recent heritage celebrations, where it was resolved that the time had come to redesign the Moderatorial gown to reflect Ghanaian identity, climate, and cultural expression.
He noted that the current gown—inspired by 18th‑century British clerical dress—has served the church well but now requires contextual review. He stressed that the church cannot continue using a design that does not fully consider practical adaptation, cultural relevance, localisation, and climatic implications.
Rev. Odjawo said the competition provides an opportunity for gifted designers, creatives, and artisans within and beyond the church to contribute to an important global conversation about African Christian identity. “We hope this will not just be a contest,” he said, “but a platform to share deep perspectives, fresh ideas, and celebrate creativity.”
He expressed delight at the strong turnout and thanked all participants for embracing what he described as an exciting and historic milestone. He welcomed attendees on behalf of the Moderator and expressed confidence that the competition would produce a gown that reflects the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s heritage, mission, and cultural pride.
