On the occasion of Youth and Students Sunday in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Moderator of General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has urged members of the National Union of Presbyterian Students, Ghana (NUPS‑G), University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale local, to surrender themselves to godly guidance.
Addressing the congregation, the Moderator stated the critical role NUPS‑G has played in shaping leaders for both the church and society. “NUPS‑G has served as a nurturing ground for many leaders of our church. The Lord used the NUPS‑G to prepare us,” he said, encouraging the students to yield themselves to God so that He may prepare them.
The Moderator expressed joy at worshipping with the students on Youth and Students Sunday. He reminded the students that the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has inspired generations and continues to make massive contributions to national development.
Highlighting the church’s impact, Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye pointed to the Presbyterian Church’s role in education and healthcare, describing it as the third largest contributor to health services in Ghana. “You are in a church that has influenced the nation. You are not in the wrong church,” he assured the students.
He traced Ghana’s cocoa story, explaining that early missionaries of the church introduced cocoa to Akuapem, which later became a cornerstone of the nation’s economy. He also reflected on the church’s independence from European influence and its role in Ghana’s political history, noting that among the Big Six who spearheaded the independence struggle, four were dedicated Presbyterians.
This, he said, should encourage students to take pride in their heritage and remain committed to the church’s mission. The Moderator further spoke about the global reach of the Presbyterian Church, stressing its expansion worldwide.
He urged the students to plant congregations wherever they find themselves and to bring friends and families to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. “You are not in the wrong church,” he repeated, underscoring the call to mission and evangelism.
