After the revelry of Easter Sunday and all the celebration in the bicentennial cloth, congregations across the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) are gathering today for Emmaus Day activities, a cherished tradition that connects the Easter story to our lived experiences.
Across the presbyteries, members are meeting in their congregations and designated centres for what promises to be a fun‑filled and spiritually enriching day.
Emmaus Day traces its roots to the biblical account in Luke 24:13–35, where two disciples, overwhelmed by grief after the crucifixion, encountered the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus. It was an encounter that transformed despair into renewed faith and sent them running back to Jerusalem to share the good news.
Over the years, Emmaus Day has become a symbolic extension of Easter, an opportunity for believers to reflect on the resurrection, rediscover hope, and strengthen fellowship. Traditionally observed on Easter Monday, the day blends communal bonding, outdoor activities, games, music, and intergenerational fellowship.
It serves as a reminder that the resurrection is not only a historical event but a lived experience that continues to open our eyes and hearts. As congregants gather in parks, church compounds, retreat centres, and community fields with their families and ministers to mark the day, they are expected to share meals, sing, pray, and enjoy wholesome recreation, all reflecting Christ’s glory in our lives.
