The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has ended day one of his weeklong pastoral visit to the Western Presbytery, delivering a message of encouragement, unity, and growth to congregants and church leaders.
Pedu Engagement: Building on the Foundation of Christ
On the first part of his day one schedule, the Moderator met with districts in and around Cape Coast, including Mankessim, Saltpond, Cape Coast, and Pedu. He commended the Chairperson of the Western Presbytery, Rev. Dr. Joseph Apea Asamoah, and other officers for their dedicated service to the Church.
Expounding on the Church’s ecclesiastical theme, he emphasised that while “Celebrating Our Heritage” will remain a focus until 2028, the emphasis for this year is on “Building on the Foundation Laid.” He reminded the gathering that the true foundation is Jesus Christ.
“It’s our turn to build on the foundation and the good work done by others,” he said. “I call on the membership of the church to love things of God, love prayer, love the study of God, love fellowship.” He encouraged ministers, catechists, and congregants not to relent in their service to God and the PCG, and to wear their Presbyterian identity with pride.
Bicentennial Vision and Church Growth
Touching on the upcoming Bicentennial Anniversary of the PCG in 2028, the Moderator urged the Church to celebrate the milestone with purpose and enthusiasm. “We may not be around for the 250th anniversary, so let’s mark the bicentennial in style,” he said.
He also reiterated the importance of Agenda 2Million, the Church’s growth and evangelism initiative, noting that intentional evangelism and discipleship training will be central to the anniversary celebrations. “I’m glad that Western Presbytery has made significant progress. I encourage you to go beyond the 10 percent growth target,” he added.
On the Kutunse Project, the Moderator called for collective support to realise the vision of a world-class conference centre. “It’s a very capital-intensive project. It is progressing. We need everyone’s support. We must help ourselves,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming the need for unity and collective effort. “When congregations are strong, districts will be strong. When districts are strong, Presbyteries will be strong. And when Presbyteries are strong, the General Assembly will be strong.”
Assin Fosu Stop: Supporting Faith and Livelihoods
The Moderator’s second stop was Assin Fosu, where he met with the Assin Fosu District, Fosu South District, and Twifo Praso District. He commended the Agents of the Church and particularly the catechists for their smart appearance and encouraged the gathering to remain steadfast in their faith through Bible study and prayer.
He introduced the Bicentennial Bible, printed in various local languages to reflect the Church’s heritage and diversity, and urged members to purchase and use it actively.
Reinforcing the Agenda 2Million vision, he called on congregants to work diligently toward church expansion at all levels. In a gesture of support for local entrepreneurship, ten hairdressers from the Assin Fosu congregation received hair dryers to boost their businesses.
The Moderator pledged that the Department of Social Services (DSS) would organise training sessions to help them manage their enterprises effectively. The visit concluded with a lively question-and-answer session, reflecting the Moderator’s commitment to engaging directly with local congregants.
