The Moderator of the Generally Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye has celebrated the church’s rich heritage while cautioning against complacency in its growth agenda.
Addressing the 21st National Evangelism and Church Growth Consultation, he reflected on the legacy of the Basel Mission, Caribbean Christians, and Scottish missionaries whose efforts birthed the PCG. He reminded the church that we have a responsibility to continue spreading the gospel.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye praised initiatives such as the Agenda 2 Million, the planting of 1,000 new churches, and the introduction of the National Crusade, which was successfully hosted by the Brong-Ahafo Presbytery earlier this year. He expressed confidence that the Asante Presbytery, set to host the 2026 crusade, would deliver with equal excellence.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, however, raised concern over declining growth figures, noting that while the church recorded a 7.57% increase in 2024, this fell short of the 10% target. He warned that the Agenda 2 Million is at risk unless presbyteries intensify efforts, citing the need for hard work, focus, and purposefulness.
The Moderator urged defaulting presbyteries to fulfill commitments such as payments for motorcycles meant to support evangelism. As the church prepares for its bicentennial, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye called on leaders and members to celebrate their heritage not only by looking back but by pressing forward with renewed energy.
“We must remain relevant through numerical growth and discipleship,” he said, stressing that with Christ as the foundation, the PCG can achieve greater impact worldwide.
