The Presbyterian University, Ghana (PUG) proudly dedicated its state-of-the-art Cyber Security Lab on 13th November, 2024, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to developing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals in Ghana. This advanced facility was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu Sekyere, the Founder and CEO of Virtual Security Africa, a dedicated Presbyterian Church member, with a longstanding commitment to enhancing cybersecurity infrastructure and training within the country.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, Chancellor of PUG and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana officiated the dedication ceremony. In his address, Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in today’s digital era, particularly as Ghana advances in adopting digital solutions across various sectors. He commended and appreciated Mr. Sekyere for his visionary support and noted how this lab will not only serve PUG’s students but also contribute significantly to Ghana’s broader digital security landscape.

“Cybersecurity is essential in safeguarding our digital future. This lab symbolizes the Presbyterian University’s dedication to equipping our students with the tools they need to confront and mitigate the risks associated with cyber threats,” Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye remarked.

Vice Chancellor of PUG, Prof. John Anim, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the university community, recognizing the lab as a “transformative gift” that aligns with the university’s mission to deliver practical, quality education in a world that increasingly demands technological proficiency. “We are overjoyed by Mr. Sekyere’s benevolent contribution, which is a testament to his commitment to education and cybersecurity in Ghana,” he said.

The newly established lab features cutting-edge equipment and software designed to immerse students in a hands-on learning environment. It will host courses in ethical hacking, digital forensics, cyber threat intelligence, and other critical areas of cybersecurity. The lab aims to empower students to address real-world challenges and foster innovation in cybersecurity to meet the demands of Ghana’s growing digital economy.

In his remarks, Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu Sekyere reiterated his commitment to developing local talent and strengthening Ghana’s cybersecurity sector. “As technology advances, so too must our defense mechanisms. It is my firm belief that by investing in cybersecurity education, we are not only protecting our digital landscape but also empowering our youth with critical skills for the future,” Mr. Sekyere said. He again pledged his continuous support to the University and indicated that this is the second in the entire Country. PUG’s Cyber Security Lab comes second to that of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

The Cyber Security Lab at PUG is a step toward ensuring that Ghana produces cybersecurity experts capable of safeguarding the nation’s digital assets. Mr. Sekyere’s sponsorship exemplifies the positive impact that private-sector partnerships can have on educational institutions.
