On the fifth day of his pastoral tour of the Western Presbytery, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, addressed a durbar of congregants and church leaders at the Salem Congregation, Anaji, Takoradi, urging them to remain steadfast in prayer, unity, and service to the Church.
District Reports and Encouragement
As has been the practice throughout the Moderator’s visit, the durbar began with reports from five District Ministers representing Agona, Ahanta, Kwesimintsim, Effiekuma, Sekondi, and Takoradi. These reports highlighted the progress and challenges within their respective districts.
In his address, the Moderator encouraged presbyters, caretakers, catechists, and ministers to remain strong in the Lord and to continually pray for the Church. “Remain faithful to the Lord who has called you,” he urged. “Let your strength be renewed through prayer and service.”
Bicentennial Celebration and Legacy Bibles
Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye reiterated his call for full participation in the upcoming Bicentennial Anniversary of the PCG in 2028. He emphasised the importance of celebrating this historic milestone with joy and unity. He also encouraged congregants to patronise the Special Legacy Bibles, describing them as more than just scripture.
“These are not ordinary Bibles. They are legacy Bibles, filled with rich content about the Church’s history and faith journey,” he said. Responding to a request to have the Bibles printed in Fante, the Moderator assured the gathering that the suggestion would be considered.
Church Growth and the Kutunse Project
The Moderator emphasised the importance of Agenda 2Million, the Church’s strategic initiative to grow its membership. He urged the five district ministers not to relent in their efforts to expand the Church’s reach.
He also provided an update on the Kutunse Project, a major infrastructure development initiative of the PCG. “The work is progressing, but we need more funds,” he said. “We are exploring other support avenues beyond direct contributions from congregations.”
Commendation and Leadership Transition
The Moderator took a moment to commend Rev. Dr. Apea Asamoah, Chairperson of the Western Presbytery, for his dedicated service. “Your work has been demanding, and we are grateful. As your term ends next year, we pray that God will guide the Presbytery to elect someone worthy of the call,” he said.
Church’s Stance on Social Issues
During a lively question-and-answer session, the Moderator addressed concerns from congregants on various issues. On the Church’s position regarding illegal mining (galamsey) and LGBTQ+ matters, he was unequivocal: “The PCG has always been vociferous against galamsey and LGBTQ+ practices. Our position has been clearly communicated to the government following the 2025 General Assembly.”
He also responded to a question about the structure of the PCG, explaining that the Church operates under a unique governance model that shapes its decision-making and administration. On the topic of welcoming back those who return to Christ, the Moderator encouraged compassion and discipleship. “We must welcome them, teach them, and accept them—just as Christ did,” he said.
Donation and Closing Remarks
Two members of the congregation who are hairdressers were given two hair dryers to support their business. The two beauticians would join 10 others in Assin Fosu for an entrepreneurial training to be organised by the department of Development and Social Services. In closing, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye urged the congregation to remain faithful to God and to serve both Him and the Church with dedication. “Let us be faithful to God and serve Him and His Church well,” he concluded.
