The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called for a united front in tackling illegal mining (galamsey), describing it as one of the “demons” afflicting the nation.

Speaking at the 87th Speech and Prize Giving Day celebration of the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec-Legon), held under the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage: Shaping Future Leaders Through Discipline and Academic Excellence,” the Moderator cited the legion of demons confronted by Jesus in scripture, noting that Ghana too faces many demons, with galamsey being among the most destructive.

He challenged Presec alumni in positions of authority and influence in the country’s socio-economic development to rise to the occasion. “Help fight galamsey with full force and crush it,” he urged, stressing that the future of the nation depends on decisive action against the menace.

Chairman of the Occasion, Edmond Ahadome, Executive Partner of Adomi Group Limited, reminded students of their shared responsibility as future leaders. He encouraged them to “dream globally, succeed internationally, invest nationally, and return home,” adding that they should use God’s light to transform the country.

Headmaster, Mr. David Odjidja, acknowledged the PCG’s continued support and traced the school’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming one of Ghana’s most sought-after institutions. He reaffirmed the ambition of making Presec a world-class school, anchored in Presbyterian values noting that the school’s 90th anniversary will coincide with the PCG’s bicentennial celebration.

He also commended the Y2K Year Group and highlighted the school’s achievements in agriculture, science, energy, and Scripture Union contests, attributing success to support from old student associations and individuals. Former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, encouraged the students not to despair in the midst of challenges.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presec alumnus, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, lauded the Y2K Year Group and emphasised that heritage is not merely about the past but about shaping the future. He praised Presec’s nationwide recognition for academic excellence, describing its heritage as “not an artifact.”

He observed that the boarding school system and the diversity it encourages has enriched Ghana’s social fabric. Hon. Ablakwa further emphasised discipline as “the quiet architect behind Presec’s success”.

The minister donated 47 laptops to the best-performing students and pledged to take the top three students on his next foreign trip. Several other students including teaching and non-teaching staff were also awarded for their academic excellence, dedicated and committed service.
