The Ga Presbytery Junior Youth (JY) in their effort at strengthening local language proficiency, has organised Ghanaian Language examinations for its members across the Presbytery. The initiative forms part of a broader plan to promote literacy in indigenous languages and to support national campaigns aimed at preserving Ghana’s linguistic and cultural heritage.

The examinations, written in Ga, Akuapem Twi, and Asante Twi, were conducted at four centres — Osu PRESEC, Teshie PRESEC, Tema PRESEC, and Fafraha Presby Basic School. The multi‑centre approach ensured wider participation and provided young learners with a structured opportunity to deepen their reading and writing skills in their mother tongues.

Beyond encouraging conversational fluency, the examinations are designed to help JY members develop strong literacy foundations in Ga and Twi. This aligns with the Ghana Education Service’s emphasis on improving local language competence, particularly at the basic level, where the use of Ghanaian languages as a medium of instruction enhances comprehension and academic performance.

The initiative also responds to growing concerns about the decline in the use of indigenous languages, especially Ga, within the Greater Accra Region. By promoting literacy among young people, the Ga Presbytery JY hopes to inspire a renewed appreciation for local languages and to strengthen cultural identity among the next generation.

Leaders of the Presbytery describe the effort as essential to ensuring that young people maintain a meaningful connection to their heritage. The examinations, they noted, are not merely academic exercises but a commitment to safeguarding the linguistic traditions that shape the identity of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the communities it serves.
