Galamsey fight is for national good — Moderator
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare‑Kwakye, has emphasized that the national fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, must be understood as a collective effort to protect Ghana’s future rather than an attack on any individual or group.
Speaking to PCG TV after the postgraduate congregation of the Presbyterian University, Ghana, the Moderator said the widespread concern over galamsey reflects a shared commitment by Ghanaians to safeguard the country’s environment, water bodies, and future generations. “The whole Ghana is against corruption and galamsey,” he noted, stressing that speaking against such practices is both a moral and patriotic duty.
He explained that when the Church raises its voice against corruption and environmental destruction, it does so out of responsibility—not partisanship. The Church’s advocacy, he said, is rooted in its mandate to promote justice, stewardship, and the common good. “We do not speak to attack anyone,” he added. “We speak because the wellbeing of the nation is at stake.”
Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare‑Kwakye linked the issue to the broader need for ethical leadership and responsible citizenship. He urged graduates and young professionals to be part of the solution by applying the discipline, integrity, and values gained through Christian education. He encouraged them to support national efforts that promote accountability, sustainable development, and environmental protection.
He further noted that the consequences of galamsey, polluted rivers, destroyed farmlands, and weakened ecosystems, pose long‑term threats to national survival. Addressing these challenges, he said, requires courage, honesty, and a united front.
The Moderator ended by calling on all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation, to support the fight against galamsey for the sake of the nation’s future. “This is about Ghana,” he said. “We must all stand together.”
