Don’t take church conflicts to social media

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has issued a strong call to members and leaders of the church to uphold unity, avoid public disputes, and intensify evangelism as the denomination prepares for its historic Bicentennial celebrations.

During his pastoral visit to the Ga West Presbytery, the Moderator expressed deep concern about the increasing trend of church-related disagreements being taken to social media. He warned that careless words, rumours, and online confrontations have the potential to damage the image, unity, and public witness of the church.

He urged ministers, officers, and congregants to refrain from posting internal conflicts on social media or engaging in actions that bring the church into public disrepute.
“Let us be one. Let me only hear good news from you,” he appealed, emphasizing that the strength of the Presbyterian church lies in its unity, mutual love, and disciplined approach to resolving differences.

Transitioning from unity to mission, the Moderator also raised concerns about the pace of growth under the church’s Agenda 2 Million membership expansion programme. He challenged the Ga West Presbytery—currently the third-largest in the denomination—to lead the way in reversing declining growth trends in some Districts.

He called for intensified evangelism, deliberate church planting, and renewed commitment to discipleship, stressing that a minimum 10 percent growth rate across the Presbytery would significantly advance the church’s national vision. He further disclosed that the Bicentennial Church Planting Initiative has already established over 500 new congregations nationwide, with a target of 1,000 churches by 2028.

The Moderator encouraged ministers and leaders to approach the Bicentennial not only as a celebration of the church’s rich heritage but also as a call to renewed mission. Church leaders present assured him of their commitment to meeting and exceeding the growth targets through strengthened evangelism, community outreach, and vibrant congregational life.
