The Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Sunday celebrated the 2022 Children’s Day across the country in grand style. The annual event, which is a week set aside for children has been part of the Church for decades.
At the Ramseyer Congregation in Kumasi, the celebration took a different style as the entire children service joined the adult service on the day. The children recited Bible verses, poems, bible reading, and choreography among others.
Pioneer and long service teachers of the Children Ministry were honoured with plaques and citations. Notable among them were Mrs. Theodosia Wilhelmina Jackson, Director of Jackson College of Education in Kumasi and Rev Benson Osafo Kantanka, Asante Presbytery Chairperson of the PCG and other people.
The celebration was on the theme: “Jesus, the Light-The Child’s Friend”. The Moderator of the General of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Rt. Rev Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante who was the special guest of honour for the day in his sermon commended the Ramseyer Congregation for nurtured him when he was a child. He also paid tribute to some individual church members of the Congregation who took keen interest in his upbringing.
The Moderator gave six Biblical propositions on children which included; Children are a heritage from the Lord, Children are highly to be respected and cherished, Children are to be trained or nurtured, Children can come to Jesus, Children should obey their parents in the Lord and Practice your faith like little children.
He challenged parents not to only strive to make money, but must also think about their children’s welfare. Rt Rev Prof. Mante reminded parents that it would not be worth it leaving home early to make money, and having their children go wayward because of lack of parental care, saying “if you don’t involve God in your struggles all will be useless.”
He said there was the need for parents to show love and care to their children and build trust among them. He also reminded parents, teachers and care givers that their characters and examples they showed to children could drive them away from leading a godly life and growing into responsible children.
On the day, children recited memory verses, and other educative poems and Presbyterian hymns which did not only feed the souls of congregant’s present but also inspired congregants to hold on to their Christian faith. The memory verses were in English language and the mother tongue, the Asante Twi.
The Moderator is currently on a pastoral visit to the Asante Presbytery started on Thursday 17th February 2022. The Moderator is expected to visit all the 41 Pastoral Districts in the Asante Presbytery.
