Don’t turn churches into theatre houses – Rev. Foster Kwakye
Chairperson of the Sekyere Presbytery, Rev. Sam Foster Kwakye, has issued a strong call to ministers, agents, and members, especially the youth, to desist from practices that dishonour the sanctity of worship. He cautioned that the church is a holy sanctuary dedicated to the glory of God and must never be reduced to a drama house.
Addressing the 23rd Presbytery Session of the Sekyere Presbytery, currently underway at the Riis Congregation, Wiamoase, the Chairperson expressed deep concern over emerging trends within some congregations, particularly during generational group week celebrations. He lamented the rise of cross‑dressing, overly theatrical displays, and “fetish‑like” performances, noting that such activities shift the focus from worship to entertainment.
Rev. Foster Kwakye warned that chapels risk becoming concert arenas when the primary aim of these activities is amusement rather than edification. While acknowledging that the Presbyterian Church of Ghana encourages creativity and innovation among its groups, he stressed that such innovations must always honour God and uphold Presbyterian identity.
He urged members to evaluate their actions in light of 1 Corinthians 14:40, which instructs believers that “all things be done decently and in order.” He reminded the Presbytery that the Church’s heritage is built on reverence, discipline, and orderly worship—values that must be preserved for future generations.
The 23rd Presbytery Session is being held under the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage: Building on the Foundation Already Laid” and will be climaxed with a thanksgiving service on Sunday, 3rd May 2026.
