B/A Presbytery anniversary: Faith, culture on display

0

The Brong Ahafo Presbytery has celebrated its 60th Anniversary with a vibrant durbar highlighting the Presbytery’s rich heritage, cultural identity, and longstanding commitment to God’s mission. The event showcased the organic relationship between Christian faith and culture, affirming the church’s role in shaping communities and transforming lives through the Gospel.

The durbar brought together several former officers of the Presbytery, including Rev. Herbert Anim Oppong, Rev. Dr. William Kwabena Ofosu‑Addo, Rev. Dr. Reuben Owusu Asenso, and Rev. Kwadwo Owusu Sarpong, along with dignitaries and Presbyterians from across the region.

Delivering a historical reflection, the Presbytery Chairperson, Rev. Benjamin Appiah, traced the growth of the church in the then Brong Ahafo Region to four key groups: merchants who traded in Kumasi and surrounding communities, the Ramseyer Church in Kumasi, teacher‑catechists—particularly from the Eastern Region—and traditional rulers who welcomed and supported the missionary enterprise.

He noted that these foundations enabled the Presbytery to raise many distinguished leaders who later served the church nationally, including Very Rev. Dr. Sam Prempeh, Rev. Dr. Charles Gyan‑Duah, and Rev. Herbert Anim Oppong.

Reflecting personally, Rev. Appiah expressed gratitude for the Presbytery’s formative role in his own life and ministry, describing it as the place where he was nurtured in faith, discovered his calling, and grew into leadership.

The durbar also featured an impressive exhibition of indigenous meals, cultural artefacts, and creative artworks. A standout display was a collection of pencil portraits by Katherine‑Grace Kusi Antwi, a 10‑year‑old member of the Children’s Service at Resurrection Congregation, New Dormaa.

Inspired by nature and storytelling, the young artist continues to develop her talent through consistent practice and mentorship, representing the emerging creative potential within the church. The celebration underscored the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s ongoing mission to shape lives, preserve culture, and proclaim Christ across generations.
