The Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. David Aboagye‑Danquah, has issued a strong warning that illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—poses a grave threat to Ghana’s future and must be confronted with urgency and moral courage.

Speaking at the Praise Congregation, Ashongman, during the nationwide observance of Red Sunday, the Clerk said the church cannot remain silent while irresponsible mining destroys the environment and endangers the lives of present and future generations.

“Galamsey threatens our future. It exposes all of us to great dangers,” he declared, stressing that the greed driving illegal mining is placing the nation on a dangerous path. He called for an immediate end to irresponsible mining practices that continue to pollute rivers, degrade forests, and destroy farmlands.

Rev. Aboagye‑Danquah reminded Christians of their biblical duty to care for God’s creation, noting that stewardship is not optional but a divine mandate. “It is the duty of Christians to safeguard our vegetation, water resources, and all that God has given us,” he said, urging congregations to rise and defend the integrity of the environment.

Red Sunday, instituted by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, mobilises congregations across the country to wear red and speak boldly against galamsey. The Clerk encouraged members to continue advocating for stronger enforcement of mining laws, accountability from duty‑bearers, and community education to protect the nation’s natural resources.

He concluded with a call for collective responsibility, insisting that Ghana must not sacrifice its future for short‑term gain.
