Disciple-making is hope for the future
The Global Director for Generations, the Lausanne Movement, Nana Yaw Offei Awuku has underscored the centrality of discipleship as the hope for the future of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) and the wider Christian community.
Speaking at the 2025 National Evangelism and Church Growth Consultation at the Ramseyer Training Institute, Abetifi–Kwahu, on the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage: Building on the Foundation Already Laid Through Effective Discipleship”, he called on the church to recommit to its heritage and vision by building on the solid foundation of Christ-centeredness.
He reminded participants of Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 3:11: “For no one can lay any other foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” He emphasised that all disciple-making, disciple-maturing, and disciple-mobilisation efforts must celebrate this foundation.
He urged the church to imagine the transformative impact if every PCG member lived as a Christ-centered believer, empowered by the Spirit and committed to holistic ministry. He noted that the PCG is one of the few institutions that cares for human life from cradle to grave, with ministries ranging from children’s services to elderly care.
He praised the church’s dedication to systematic Christian education through generational groups and its extensive network of Presbyterian schools across Ghana, which continue to shape moral development and discipline despite societal challenges.
He challenged participants to embrace vision clarity, intentionality, and commitment, working alongside ministers to equip members for maturity in Christ. Nana Yaw Offei Awuku also reflected on the church’s leadership theology and practice, which prioritise local leadership and encourage lay participation alongside ordained clergy.
He celebrated the biblical foundation of the priesthood of all believers, which fosters ownership and responsibility among members. Drawing from personal experience, he acknowledged the pioneering role of catechists and their sessions in evangelism, church planting and growth.
Nana Yaw Offei Awuku stressed that mobilising the laity into leadership and ministry remains one of the most critical gaps to bridge for healthy church growth. He challenged the church to envision what would happen if members moved from being passive pew warmers to actively pursuing their ministry calling for Christ’s sake.
