Rev. Sowateye Obli elected Ga West Presbytery Chairperson
The Ga West Presbytery has prayerfully elected Rev. David Sowateye Obli as its new Presbytery Chairperson during the ongoing 2026 Presbytery Session in Kwashieman.
The election, conducted in a peaceful and reverent atmosphere, was one of the defining moments of the Session hosted by the Kwashieman District at the Trinity Congregation, Kwashieman.
Delegates from across the Presbytery gathered in a spirit of unity and discernment to choose the next leader who will guide the Presbytery’s mission. The journey to the final decision began with nominations that revealed a strong field of respected ministers.
Rev. Obli led the nominations with 40 votes, closely followed by Rev. Philip Nii Anan Nai with 39 votes, signalling from the outset a closely contested election. Rev. Paul Adjei Djan received 10 votes, while Rev. Dr. Joseph Kofi Antwi secured 4 votes.
The election unfolded in two rounds. In the first round, Rev. Obli obtained 50 votes, representing 50.5 percent of the ballots cast, while Rev. Nai followed with 43 votes. Although Rev. Obli crossed the 50 percent mark, the electoral rules required a second round to determine a clear winner.
Delegates returned prayerfully for the final ballot, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the Presbytery’s future. In the decisive round, Rev. Obli widened his lead, securing 62 votes, representing 63.92 percent, while Rev. Nai received 35 votes, representing 36.08 percent.
One ballot was rejected. With this outcome, Rev. David Sowateye Obli was duly declared the 3rd Chairperson of the Ga West Presbytery. Members and observers at the Session noted that the results reflected more than numerical victory; they expressed a collective desire for a strengthened mission.
Rev. Obli’s ability to expand his support between the first and second rounds was seen as a sign of his unifying appeal—an essential quality for presbyterial leadership in a rapidly growing and diverse Presbytery.
Church members interviewed after the election expressed optimism about the future, anticipating that his tenure will emphasise pastoral care, administrative efficiency, evangelism, and mission‑oriented growth, especially within the expanding communities of Ga West.
Rev. Obli, who assumes office in September, steps into a role filled with both opportunities and responsibilities. His election is not merely a personal milestone but a call to faithful service—one that will require spiritual discernment, strategic leadership, and unwavering commitment to the mission of the church.
