PreHA updates clinical team on maternal, child nutrition
The Nutrition Unit of the Presbyterian Hospital, Agogo (PreHA) has updated clinical staff on one of the most critical areas of maternal and child health—Maternal and Child Nutrition—during its Clinical Meeting held on Thursday, 21st May 2026.
The session, led by Mr. Frederick Mensah, Nutritionist at PreHA, focused on clinical evidence and intervention strategies essential for improving health outcomes for mothers and children. Addressing staff from across the hospital, Mr. Mensah stated the central role of nutrition in pregnancy, infancy and early childhood, noting that poor nutritional status remains a major contributor to maternal complications, low birth weight, stunting and preventable childhood illnesses.
He emphasised that effective nutritional care is not only a medical responsibility but a public health priority that demands coordinated action across departments. The presentation explored evidence‑based approaches to maternal supplementation, breastfeeding support, complementary feeding, micronutrient interventions and community‑level nutrition surveillance.
Mr. Mensah underscored the need for clinicians, midwives and nutritionists to work collaboratively to ensure that every mother and child receives timely, targeted and practical nutritional guidance. Participants engaged in discussions on strengthening nutrition counselling at antenatal clinics, improving documentation, and integrating nutrition assessments into routine care.
The session also highlighted the importance of early detection of malnutrition and the use of standardised tools to guide treatment. Hospital leadership commended the Nutrition Unit for its proactive role in continuous professional development, noting that such updates enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver holistic, patient‑centred care.
