Ga West Presbytery turns 10 years

Ten years ago, on a historic Sunday morning at the Kaneshie Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), a vision that had lingered in the hearts of church leaders for more than three decades finally became a reality. In June 2026, that vision stands as one of the most remarkable success stories in the contemporary history of the Church.

The Ga West Presbytery, the 21st Presbytery to be established in the PCG, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with thanksgiving, reflection, and renewed commitment to the mission of Christ. What began in 2016 with eleven districts and a mission field has grown into a vibrant ecclesiastical jurisdiction comprising twenty‑three districts, one sub‑district, and one mission field, serving thousands of Presbyterians across the western corridor of Accra and beyond.

A Dream Thirty‑Five Years in the Making

The story of the Ga West Presbytery is one of patience, perseverance, and divine timing. For more than three decades, discussions about creating another Presbytery out of the then Ga Presbytery remained a recurring subject among church leaders. The desire was driven by the need to improve evangelism, strengthen administration, and respond effectively to rapid population growth within the western parts of Accra.

The turning point came in 2014 when the then Chairperson of the Ga Presbytery, Rev. Dr. Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor, formally proposed the creation of two new Presbyteries. The proposal received overwhelming support and was eventually approved by the General Assembly. On June 12, 2016, the long‑awaited dream became reality with the official erection of the Ga West Presbytery—an emotional and historic moment still remembered by many.

From Foundation to Flourishing Growth

The newly established Presbytery initially comprised eleven districts: Abeka, Adabraka Official Town, Apenkwa, Aplaku, Dansoman, Gbawe, Kaneshie, Kwashieman, Lartebiokorshie, New Achimota, and North Kaneshie. What followed over the next decade exceeded all expectations. Through aggressive evangelism, church planting, and strategic administration, the Presbytery embarked on an unprecedented expansion programme.

Between 2017 and 2019 alone, five new districts were created—Mamprobi, Ablekuman, Sakaman, New Weija, and Asofan. Subsequent administrations continued the momentum, leading to the creation of New Gbawe, Amasaman, Fise, Sarpeiman, Adjen Kotoku, Awoshie, and Manhean. Today, Ga West stands as one of the fastest‑growing Presbyteries within the PCG, demonstrating the effectiveness of localized ministry and visionary leadership.

Leadership That Made a Difference

Observers attribute much of the Presbytery’s success to the dedication of its leaders and the collective commitment of ministers, elders, and members. The pioneering administration—led by Rev. Daniel Amoako Nyarko as the first Chairperson and Rev. Philip Nii Annan‑Nai as the first Clerk—laid a strong foundation for institutional growth and stability.

Subsequent administrations built upon that foundation with continuity, innovation, and expansion. The current Clerk of Presbytery, Rev. Kennedy Kofi Asante Sarpong, has overseen further growth during the Decennial era, including the creation of the Awoshie and Manhean Districts. Church historians note that the success of Ga West is a testimony to collaborative leadership and the shared vision of clergy and laity working together for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

More Than Church Buildings

While numerical growth is impressive, the Presbytery’s achievements extend far beyond district creation. Over the past decade, Ga West has demonstrated that ministry involves both spiritual transformation and socio‑economic development. Three flagship projects stand out:

  • The Presbytery Office Complex – Nearing completion, this facility represents a major investment in institutional development and will serve as the administrative headquarters of the Presbytery.
  • The Presbytery Poultry Farm – A bold step toward financial sustainability, contributing to ministry funding and local food production.
  • The Gari Processing Enterprise – Supporting local farmers, creating employment, and promoting community development and self‑reliance.

Together, these projects reflect a Presbytery committed to preaching the Gospel while addressing practical human needs.

A Decade Worth Celebrating

As celebrations unfold across the Presbytery, members reflect on ten years of remarkable growth, faithful service, and God’s abundant grace. The words of Habakkuk 2:3—often associated with the birth of the Presbytery—resonate deeply: “For the vision is yet for an appointed time… Though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come.”

Indeed, the vision has spoken. From eleven districts to twenty‑three. From a dream to a thriving reality. From a proposal on paper to a Presbytery shaping lives, communities, and the future of the Church.

As Ga West enters its second decade, expectations are high. Yet members remain confident that the same God who guided the journey from 2016 to 2026 will continue to lead the Presbytery into even greater heights of spiritual growth, evangelistic outreach, and transformational development.

For the thousands who call Ga West home, the tenth anniversary is not merely a celebration of the past—it is a declaration that the best chapters of the story are yet to be written. To God be the glory; great things He has done.
