50 Years of Women in Ordained Ministry
Asawasi hosts Presbytery commemoration
The Asawasi District of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has held a presbytery‑level commemoration to mark 50 years of women in ordained ministry, celebrating a historic milestone in the life and witness of the Church.
The service took place on Sunday, 21st June 2026, at the Ebenezer Congregation, Asawasi, drawing ministers, church leaders, women’s groups, and congregants from across the area. A highlight of the celebration was the presence of Rev. Dora Ofori‑Owusu (Rtd.), the first woman to be commissioned into the ordained ministry of the PCG in 1976.
Her attendance brought a deep sense of gratitude and reflection, as she represents the pioneering generation whose courage opened the door for women to serve fully in Word and Sacrament.
The service traced the journey of women in ministry—from the early struggles for acceptance, through decades of advocacy, to the present era where women serve as ministers, chaplains, theologians, and administrators across the church.
Speakers acknowledged the sacrifices of the trailblazers and celebrated the growing number of women who now contribute significantly to preaching, pastoral care, mission, education, and social transformation.
The commemoration also highlighted the legacies of women who have shaped the church’s history—those who served in rural missions, led congregations through difficult seasons, championed Christian education, and mentored younger ministers.
More stories, historical reflections, and personal accounts from the service will be shared in subsequent updates as the PCG continues its year‑long celebration of 50 years of women in ordained ministry.
