The Royal Parade Grounds of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, became the setting for a rousing sermon as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, closed the Bible Study and Prayer Group (BSPG) 60th Anniversary Convention.

Preaching on the theme “What Is Your Foundation?”, the Moderator questioned the spiritual foundations upon which members of BSPG, and Christians are building their faith.

Drawing from Matthew 7:24–27, he reminded the congregation that Matthew chapters 5–7 form one of the longest recorded sermons of Jesus — the Sermon on the Mount — where Christ taught with authority that astonished His listeners.

“Jesus did not hide the truth,” Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye declared. “To Him, what was good was good; what was not good was not good.” He explained that Jesus’ teaching placed His hearers into two categories: wise builders and foolish builders.

“All who listened to Jesus were builders — some wise, others foolish,” he said, stressing that storms would inevitably come in the Christian life, and only those built on a firm foundation would endure.

Using vivid imagery, the Moderator described the parable: “The house faced a storm, there was heavy rain, there were strong winds. The house built on the rock survived the storm. The house built on sand crumbled and fell.” He likened this to the spiritual journey of believers, urging BSPG members to reflect deeply on their own foundations.

“Are you building on rock or are you building on sand?” he asked. “The difference is your response to listening to God’s Word.” He emphasised that hearing alone was insufficient: “Listening to the Gospel is good. Faith comes by hearing but listening and doing what the Word of God says is what makes the difference.”

Quoting James 1:22–24, the Moderator warned, “If we hear the Word of God and still live in sin, we are like the foolish builder who built on sand.” He called on Christians to embrace a new life in 2026, “a new life based on a new response to God’s Word. We cannot continue in the old way.”

He reminded Christians that storms are inevitable in life. “Whether we like it or not, the storms will come,” he said. “If we listen to the Word of God and work with it, our building will stand firmly.”

The Moderator’s sermon, delivered with authority and conviction, left BSPG members challenged to examine their faith foundations as the group celebrated six decades of prayer, Bible study, and evangelistic witness within the PCG.
