Contend for the faith – Moderator charges Christians
At the launch of the National Evangelism at the Ramseyer Congregation, Adum, Kumasi, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has charged members of the church and the wider Christian community to defend their faith, warning that the spiritual abuses creeping into the Church of God are unacceptable.
He cautioned that the departure from Scripture and the teachings of Jesus Christ poses a grave danger to the spiritual life of believers, insisting that false teachings must be rejected.
“We can contend for the faith when we know the faith; we can contend for the faith when we know the Scriptures,” he declared, quoting from the book of Jude. He stressed that Jude’s words remain relevant in an age when false prophets abound, urging Christians to guard against wrong teachings and practices.
The Moderator further admonished ministers and congregants not to use the pulpit for selfish or ungodly gains. “Lots of spiritual abuse are taking place in most churches. Jesus is no longer the focus of the Christian church today. People no longer want to come to church when we talk about Jesus,” he lamented.
He added that materialism and the overemphasis on wealth in sermons risk plunging souls into misery and pain. Recalling the sacrifices of early theologians such as William Tyndale, who was killed for translating the Bible, the Moderator urged Christians to uphold Scripture and its truth.
“Examine the Scriptures to ascertain if what is being said is true. Some people sacrificed so that we would have the Bible,” he reminded, encouraging believers never to remain silent when the faith is ridiculed or mocked.
