Prayer in the Rain: What’s your concern?

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has mounted a stoic defence for worshippers who prayed and sang joyfully in the rain during the final night of the 2026 National Crusade at Jubilee Park, Kumasi, insisting that their devotion was a true expression of faith.

In a sermon on Sunday, titled “Contend for the Faith, at the Ramseyer Congregation in Kumasi, the Moderator dismissed social media criticisms that described the act as unwise.

“We were organising our crusade at the Jubilee Park and by God’s grace, on the first and second days there were no rains, but it rained on the third day, and we decided to pray while it was raining. Others too were singing. You who did not attend the crusade, how does that concern you?” he asked pointedly.

He compared the worshippers’ actions to people who dance in the rain at social events, questioning why prayer in the rain should be ridiculed. “If you go to your dance and you dance in the rain, why would you question those who pray in the rain?”

The Moderator stressed that the church will not be silenced by critics, affirming that believers know the one in whom they have trusted. He explained that those who have experienced Christ’s healing and transformation understand why worshippers would lift their voices even in the storm.

“If you have been unwell and you met Jesus and He has transformed your life, you will understand why even in the rain we will praise the Lord,” he declared. The Moderator’s remarks follow his earlier charge at the launch of the National Evangelism, where he urged Christians to “contend for the faith” and reject false teachings.
