PCG driving development through Agric and Health

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana, through its Department of Development and Social Services and Presbyterian Agriculture Services (PAS), is positioning itself as a catalyst for sustainable development with initiatives in agriculture, health, and ecological integrity, the Director of the department, Mrs. Teiko Sabah has said.

PAS, established in 1967, has supported over 15,000 farmers with seeds and fertilizers, engaged 9,000 out growers in sorghum production, and cultivated 188 acres of assorted crops across its five agricultural stations.

Speaking at the maiden edition of ‘PCG Connect’, an interactive platform set up by the church to engage members and the general public, Mrs. Teiko Sabah disclosed that the unit has set a bold goal of mobilising 20,000 acres of farmland by 2028, focusing on grains, tubers, vegetables, specialty crops, and poultry, with partnerships sought from Presbyteries, congregations, and service groups.

She disclosed that the church was also make great strides in the health sector, where the PCG operates 62 facilities across 13 regions, including the historic Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, four district hospitals, and Ghana’s only psychiatric hospital in the northern regions.

The DSS Director indicated that in 2024 alone, PCG facilities attended to 682,905 patients, provided free care worth GH¢796,827 to 3,614 poor patients, and registered 702 under NHIS. The Ecological Integrity Campaign, she added has also trained over 200 students in plastic upcycling and established waste management networks in 50 schools and churches.

These initiatives demonstrate, Mrs. Teiko Sabah said are part of the church’s holistic mission, combining spiritual care with social, agricultural, and health interventions to build resilient communities and contribute to national development.
