Moderator warns against social media misuse
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has cautioned members of the church to exercise restraint, wisdom, and responsibility in their use of social media to protect the image and integrity of the denomination.
According to the Moderator, while social media has become a powerful tool for communication, evangelism, and information sharing, its misuse has the potential to damage the church’s reputation and undermine its mission. He therefore urged members to critically evaluate every piece of information, comment, photograph, or video before publishing it online.
“Whatever you post on social media, reflect deeply before publishing and ask yourself whether it will promote the good image of the church or otherwise,” he advised. Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye expressed concern about the increasing tendency of some members to circulate content that creates unnecessary tension, misunderstanding, and public embarrassment for the church.
He called for an immediate end to practices that risk bringing the name of the Church into disrepute. The Moderator made the remarks during the second day of his official working visit to the Ga West Presbytery at the Very Rev. Max Dodu Memorial Congregation, Lartebiokorshie. He reminded members that every Presbyterian is an ambassador of Christ and a representative of the church in both physical and digital spaces.
He encouraged members to use social media positively—to promote Christian values, encourage one another, share testimonies, and support the evangelistic work of the church. The visit forms part of the Moderator’s nationwide engagements with Presbyteries to assess progress, strengthen unity, and encourage the faithful.
Church leaders present welcomed the call, noting that responsible social media engagement is essential for preserving the credibility and public witness of the Church in the digital age.
